I’m predominantly a sounding board for my husband. We talk about options. We do our research. We talk about how the different options are going to affect our family, how it’s going to affect quality of life.
I have a unique opportunity, in that I have been a caregiver for two patients with multiple myeloma.
My first husband contracted COVID when he was undergoing treatment in preparation for a stem cell transplant, and passed away in August of ‘21. And then my second husband and I reconnected because of his multiple myeloma diagnosis.
And they actually are supported very differently from each other. One really needed to talk things through. One needs to process internally more before talking things through. And so I think it’s important for caregivers to understand there’s not a one-size-fits-all way to support your patient.
You just kind of have to take cues from them and do what works best for you and your partner.
